Creatures and Stars

Celestia sat at the edge of the lake, her paws resting on cool stone while her tail curled loosely beside her. The night air was crisp, carrying the scent of water and distant earth. Above her, countless stars filled the sky, scattered across the darkness in brilliant clusters and winding trails. She had always enjoyed nights like this. There was no need to move, no prey to chase, and no reason to spend energy on anything beyond simply existing.

The water before her was almost perfectly still. Its surface reflected the heavens above so clearly that it seemed as though another sky had been trapped beneath the lake. Celestia found herself staring between the real stars and their reflections, occasionally comparing them to make sure she could still tell which was which.

A faint ripple spread across the water.

She noticed it immediately, but didn't react beyond flicking an ear. The disturbance was familiar.

The ripple widened, followed by another and then another. Deep beneath the surface, something immense shifted. Water rolled outward in gentle waves before a colossal shape slowly emerged from the darkness below.

Apparition surfaced without hurry. Most of their enormous body remained hidden beneath the lake, but a portion of their neck, head, and back broke through the surface. Water streamed from scales, fins, and jewel-like growths along their spine before slipping quietly back into the lake. Despite their size, there was remarkably little noise.

Celestia glanced over briefly before returning her attention to the stars.

Apparition did the same.

The two dragons settled into a comfortable silence. For a long time, neither moved much at all. Wind drifted across the water, occasionally ruffling the fur along Celestia's neck. Apparition floated almost motionless, rising and falling ever so slightly with the occasional natural movement of the lake.

A shooting star eventually crossed the sky.

Celestia spotted it first. Her eyes followed the bright streak as it cut across the darkness before disappearing beyond the horizon. Moments later, Apparition tilted their head upward slightly, tracking the same path.

The colossal dragon released a low sound.

It wasn't speech. It wasn't even particularly loud. The note rolled through the water like a distant whale song, deep and resonant enough that Celestia could feel it through the stone beneath her feet.

She blinked slowly.

The sound faded.

Silence returned.

The hours passed comfortably. Celestia shifted position every now and then, stretching her legs or changing which side she rested her weight on. At one point she sprawled across a flat rock, wings loosely folded and chin resting on her forepaws. Apparition remained in the lake nearby, occasionally adjusting their position with subtle movements of their fins.

The stars reflected across their dark scales whenever the water settled. Combined with the stars overhead, it created the illusion that Apparition was suspended between two skies. Their immense form seemed less like a dragon and more like a piece of the night itself drifting through the water.

Celestia found the sight strangely relaxing.

She wasn't entirely sure what Apparition thought about during these quiet nights. The dragon never explained such things. They communicated through movement, sounds, and actions rather than words. Their thoughts remained hidden beneath the surface much like the majority of their body.

Still, she had learned enough to recognize contentment.

Apparition's movements were unhurried. Their posture remained loose and relaxed. Every now and then they would angle their head toward Celestia before slowly returning their gaze to the constellations.

That was enough.

Neither dragon needed conversation.

The night itself provided plenty to observe.

As the hours slipped by, the stars slowly wheeled overhead. Constellations shifted position. New stars appeared above the horizon while others disappeared beyond it. Celestia remained on the shoreline while Apparition drifted nearby, both absorbed in the endless sky above.

Eventually the darkness began to soften. The first hints of dawn crept along the horizon, replacing black with deep blue and silver-gray. One by one the stars began to fade.

Celestia lifted her head and watched the change. Nearby, Apparition remained floating in the water, their massive silhouette gradually becoming easier to see as the world brightened.

The night was ending.

Neither seemed disappointed.

They had spent the entire evening together without saying a word, watching distant stars cross the heavens and reflections dance across the lake.

For the two dragons, that had been more than enough.
